Sport in Hexham is woven into everyday life, with local schools, clubs and volunteers working side by side to provide opportunities for all. The story here is of shared grounds, thriving clubs and a community that makes sure everyone can take part, whatever their age or ability.
Hexham Community Sports Hub: A Space for All
Sitting at the heart of town, the Hexham Community Sports Hub, based at Hexham Middle School, has fast become a focal point for people who love to play, watch or coach sport. With its 3G all-weather pitch, floodlit hockey pitch, sports hall, outdoor MUGAs and six cricket nets, the hub is used every day of the week and throughout the year by a remarkable range of clubs and teams.
The list of regular users reads like a roll call of local sporting life. Hexham Football Club, Hexham Junior Netball Club, Hexham Goalers Basketball Team, Tynedale Hockey Club, Tynedale Volleyball Club, Tynedale RFU and Tynedale Archery Club all call the hub a home of sorts. It is this spirit of sharing and inclusion that allows Hexham’s sports fans, juniors and seasoned athletes alike to stay active and connected through the seasons.
The hub is not just a collection of facilities, but a shared resource that supports informal games after school, club coaching, competitive matches and social sessions for all ages. It truly reflects Hexham’s approach to sport and creates space for everyone, together.
Hexham Tennis and Padel Club: A Tradition Since 1888
For many local families, Hexham Tennis and Padel Club is a tradition in its own right. Established back in 1888, it stands as one of the area’s oldest sporting institutions. Today, it continues to serve players from all walks of life, offering six all-weather courts, floodlights and the opportunity to try the fast-growing sport of padel alongside classic tennis.
The club’s reputation for coaching and social play is well-earned. Whether you’re a beginner, returning to the court later in life or playing at a competitive level, the club’s inclusive approach ensures there is a place for everyone. The club also has county-level recognition, listed as a registered venue for Northumberland by the LTA, highlighting its place in the local tennis scene. (source, source)
Grassroots and Outdoor Sport Across the Area
Beyond these flagship venues, Hexham's spirit of participation can be seen in the diverse range of clubs across the town and its countryside. Hexham FC Juniors play at Hexham Football Centre in Dukeshouse Wood, providing dedicated facilities for young footballers to develop skills and friendships alike.
The broader community is home to Hexham Rowing Club and Hexham Canoe Club, welcoming those who enjoy life on the water. Hexham Golf Club is another local gathering point, while Elvaston Bowls Club and Hexham Ladies Netball Club help keep tradition alive and enable new players to discover the rewards of team sport and active living in supportive settings. Instead, it is the people, including coaches, players, volunteers and supporters, who give their time and energy to keep clubs running and their doors open to all.
In every corner of Hexham, from the cricket nets to the riverbank, you will find people of all backgrounds staying active, making friends and building a legacy for the next generation. It is this quiet pride, rooted in opportunity and shared effort, that makes Hexham a truly sporting community.
